The Severed Gods Early Access (August 10, 2026) launches with five heroes, each occupying a unique niche in turn-based Break, Defend, and Sever combat. This page is the roster encyclopedia — base identities, starter skills, injury profiles, recommended relic paths, and links to tier rankings. For sigil customization read Hero Sigils; for power rankings see Heroes Tier List.

Shared systems

All heroes:

  • Navigate Low, Mid, and High zones across three worlds
  • Draft from 100+ skills and equip 80+ relics per run
  • Accumulate Karma during runs affecting events and Taoist scaling
  • Earn Hero Marks toward sigils between runs
  • Access Realm of Spirits meta from Reincarnation & Meta

Combat rules: Combat: Break & Defend. Boss sever tactics: Sever Boss Limbs.

Swordsman

Role: Balanced frontline duelist.

Strengths: Forgiving Defend values, steady Break chains, low mechanical barrier.

Weaknesses: Middle sever burst without relic support; outscaled in world three speedruns.

Starter identity: Reliable slash Break combo, basic wide Defend stance.

Recommended archetype: Defend-turtle or neutral Break-first from Relics & Builds.

Best for: First account, controller players learning limb targeting via Gamepad UI Tips.

Sigil focus: Neutral Defend bonuses — Hero Sigils.

Axeman

Role: Heavy Break and sever burst.

Strengths: Highest per-turn limb damage when armor is shredded; fast boss phase pushes.

Weaknesses: Slow Defend recovery; punishes mis-predicted telegraphs with injuries.

Starter identity: Heavy cleave Break, rage self-buff with injury tradeoff.

Recommended archetype: Break-first with sever threshold relics from Relics Tier List.

Best for: Players comfortable with Sever Boss Limbs greed patterns.

Sigil focus: Ruthless sever threshold reduction.

Scholar (Researcher)

Role: Debuff controller and boss enabler.

Strengths: Armor shred persistence across phase shifts; intent manipulation; top Heroes Tier List placement at launch.

Weaknesses: Lower solo damage in Low zones without damage relics.

Starter identity: Vulnerability application, weakpoint scan, intent scramble.

Recommended archetype: Control + sever support; skill picks on Skills Tier List.

Best for: Methodical players who read telegraphs every turn.

Sigil focus: Event rerolls and debuff duration.

Thief

Role: Crit assassin and action economy specialist.

Strengths: Explosive sever execution on broken limbs; fast Low zone clears.

Weaknesses: Fragile when Defend fails; injury stacking in world three hazards.

Starter identity: Crit sever strike, evasion step substituting Defend turns.

Recommended archetype: Crit + sever proc relic stacking; high APM on Keyboard & Mouse.

Best for: Experienced roguelite players after Swordsman fundamentals.

Sigil focus: Ruthless crit bonuses.

Taoist (Daoist)

Role: Karma-scaled mystic.

Strengths: Huge spikes when Karma path committed; spirit currency bonuses; flexible shields.

Weaknesses: Weak neutral baseline; planning overhead from Karma & Hero Sigils.

Starter identity: Karma surge scaling damage or Defend by drift position.

Recommended archetype: Karma-Taoist with matching events and relics.

Best for: Players who enjoy moral mechanic systems and sigil min-maxing.

Sigil focus: Dual-branch merciful/ruthless effects.

Unlock and availability

Full Early Access (App ID 3755930) selects all heroes immediately on hero screen. Demo (App ID 4396000) may lock Thief/Taoist depending on build — check after Demo Patch Notes.

Patch tracking

Hero base stat changes document on Early Access Launch and future Updates Hub entries. Discuss balance on Discord.

Use Run Checklist when testing new heroes to compare sever counts per run.

Cross-training value

Learning two heroes — usually Swordsman plus Scholar or Axeman — accelerates world three clears because camp drafts and relic pools overlap enough to transfer Relics & Builds knowledge without relearning Defend fundamentals from scratch.
