The Severed Gods Gamepad & UI Tips

Controller layouts that keep sever targeting accurate in turn-based fights.

Last updated:

Many The Severed Gods players prefer gamepad comfort for long roguelite sessions even though mouse targeting is faster for pixel-perfect limb clicks. Topebox ships a controller-native UI with cursor snapping, bumper skill shortcuts, and hold-to-Defend options. This guide covers default layouts, Steam Input tweaks, and UI habits that prevent mis-severs during High zone bosses.

Cursor snapping and sever accuracy

Analog stick moves a virtual cursor across limbs. Snap strength pulls cursor toward nearest valid target — increase snap for boss sever nodes, decrease for multi-enemy nodes where wrong-limb selection wastes Break turns.

Toggle precision mode (default L3 click) slows cursor for final sever confirm. Combine with telegraph review from Combat: Break & Defend before committing RT.

Defend with triggers

Hold LT / L2 to enter Defend assignment, use stick to highlight hero limbs, press face button to allocate guard points. Release LT to exit without confirming if assignments look wrong.

Controller Defend is slower than keyboard Q-overlay for split-guard scenarios — consider playing Swordsman or Taoist Defend-heavy kits until muscle memory develops. Heroes Tier List ranks controller-friendly picks separately in community notes.

Camp and draft navigation

Camp UI maps compare relics and skills on horizontal panes. Use bumpers to swap cards and A/Cross to pick. Reroll appears on Y/Triangle when meta unlocks from Reincarnation & Meta are active.

Avoid rushing draft picks — stick deadzone prevents accidental confirms when scrolling.

Steam Input profiles

Steam Input allows gyro assist, chorded skill buttons, and touchpad cursor on DualSense. Community templates circulate on Discord — search “Severed Gods sever profile” after major updates.

Recommended tweaks:

  • Lower outer ring deadzone to 0.12 for smoother micro-adjustments
  • Bind map to back paddle to reduce menu diving
  • Disable double-tap end turn if misinputs occur

Demo (App ID 4396000) and EA (App ID 3755930) share Steam Input layers on the same account.

UI readability settings

Increase UI scale to 110–125% on TV setups. Enable high contrast telegraphs so intent icons remain visible from couch distance. Subtitle size affects Karma event text — relevant for Karma & Hero Sigils routes.

Hero-specific controller notes

Axeman — map highest Break skill to RB/R1 for repeated shoulder presses.

Thief — use back paddle for crit follow-up if available.

Scholar — bind debuff inspect to touchpad click on Steam Deck.

Taoist — Karma meter on D-pad up quick view if enabled in accessibility menu.

Full kits: All Heroes.

Steam Deck and handheld PCs

Steam Deck verified status may update during Early Access — check store page via Links Hub. Lower TDP presets can reduce frame time spikes during boss particle effects that obscure limb bars. Cap FPS at 40 for stable cursor feel.

Switching from mouse mid-campaign

Steam cloud saves support switching input between sessions. First controller session after mouse play: replay tutorial Defend prompts in a Low zone node from Getting Started pathing.

Troubleshooting

  • Cursor drift — recalibrate sticks in Steam settings
  • Skills fire twice — debounce in Steam Input advanced
  • Sever confirm ignores — increase snap or use precision mode
  • Menu stuck — Menu button forces pause overlay

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is gamepad viable for world three bosses?

Yes with precision mode and snap tuning. Many players sever consistently after one world of practice.

Does the demo support the same controller layout?

Yes. Bindings match Early Access unless patch notes say otherwise.

Can I mix keyboard and controller?

The game detects last active device. Mid-turn switching is discouraged and may desync cursor state.

Are fight sticks supported?

Not officially. Steam Input may map buttons but limb targeting remains cursor-based.

Where is keyboard reference?

See Keyboard & Mouse on the Controls Hub for parallel PC bindings.
